Supporting educator wellbeing in demanding school environments
Teaching and school-based roles ask a great deal of people. Alongside workload, staff often carry emotional labour, pastoral responsibility, safeguarding concerns, and the cumulative impact of supporting others every day.
Staff Wellbeing Yoga is a calm, accessible space for staff to pause, regulate and reconnect with their own wellbeing. Sessions combine gentle movement, breathwork and evidence-informed regulation practices to help staff manage stress, ease tension and build sustainable habits that support them inside and outside work. It isn’t a fitness class or a staff social activity. It’s a specialist staff-care provision.
Who’s delivering this?
Sessions are led by me, Cerian Smith. I’m a qualified teacher with over 15 years’ teaching experience across Key Stages 2-5, so I understand the workload, the emotional demands and the rhythm of a school term from the inside. I’m also a yoga therapist trained to Level 6 (600-hour Professional Diploma, Minded Institute), fully insured, first-aid qualified and registered with the CNHC.
I’ve taught wellbeing yoga in schools in Bristol and Gloucestershire and for Gloucestershire Libraries, and I currently offer 1:1 yoga therapy as part of the wellbeing support in a Gloucester secondary school. I’m on the DBS update service and up to date with statutory safeguarding training and KCSIE. Sessions fit around your timetable, safeguarding procedures and pastoral pathways.

Why schools offer it
Staff wellbeing is central to educational outcomes. When staff feel supported, regulated and valued, the benefits reach the whole school community. It can support:
- retention and workforce sustainability
- burnout prevention and reducing stress
- emotional regulation and resilience
- healthier work-life boundaries
- staff morale and connection
- safeguarding and pastoral teams
- a positive whole-school wellbeing culture
Why staff come
- feeling emotionally depleted at the end of the day
- difficulty switching off after work
- physical tension from desk work or classroom teaching
- carrying high levels of responsibility and decision-making
- cumulative stress during busy terms
- recovering after challenging interactions or safeguarding concerns
- wanting proactive self-care before reaching crisis point
What a session looks like
Each session follows a familiar, predictable arc: arrival and grounding, gentle movement to ease tension, breath awareness and regulation tools, and a closing rest. The content shifts with who attends. Sessions are trauma-informed, invitational and shaped around staff capacity.
How schools use it
- a weekly or fortnightly staff-care session
- a lunchtime or after-school wellbeing group
- a targeted offer for pastoral or safeguarding teams
- part of INSET wellbeing provision
- a practice-led CPD session on nervous-system regulation (twilight or INSET)
- alongside Student Wellbeing Yoga and Exam Calm as a whole-school wellbeing pathway
Staff CPD: nervous-system regulation in the classroom
I also offer a practice-led CPD session for teachers and support staff: a short regulation practice, the simple psychoeducation behind it, and techniques staff can use in the classroom with no equipment and very little prep. It can run as a twilight session or INSET slot, shorter and lighter-touch or more in-depth.
